Adventure Seeker & Autumn Harvest

What can you create with a Living Life collection? The answer is plenty! I recently attended a crop and spent the weekend creating and embellishing journaling cards from the Autumn Harvest Living Life and Adventure Seeker Living Life collections. Both Living Life collections are from Inky Hot Mess.

Using a designed journaling card as is can be just what your layouts need. I used just a simple card - no extra embellishing.....You'll see how rare that is for me!

You can always make your own journaling cards whenever you need them. Taking something as simple as cardstock and embellishing it can give you exactly what you need. I used a flair, sticker, and ribbon as the embellishments. Why the yellow? I was visiting the Great Smokey Mountains in the autumn and wanted to use only colors found on autumn trees for these photos.

I have always struggled with journaling. I'm really making a conscious effort to journal. I've been working on photos from many moons ago - years - and is seeing how important getting those details down are. Even a trip from 5 years ago is tough to remember!

I actually journaled on a journaling card! And added a colored mini paper clip for a little pizazz.

Once again, I created my own journaling card using cardstock. This is one of the Swiss Dots cardstocks from Bazzill. All I did was add a sticker and the sign veneer. Viola! Done.

Here we have 2 cards from the Adventure Seeker Living Life along with the journaling card I made.

With the trip to Chimney Rock State Park in North Carolina, my husband and I took tons of photos. I struggled to find outdoor theme kits and forget finding anything as specific as the park. So when necessary I craft own cards. This one is so simple! Cardstock, stickers, ribbon, and stamp from Outdoor Trail Clear Stamps.

Another card that is super simple! Cardstock, die cuts, stickers, and flair. You're done. Simple. Oh and yes those are elk in the photos!

These photos are from Cades Cove in the Great Smokey Mountains in Eastern Tennessee. I made another journaling card with cardstock, burlap, twist ties, a die cut, and the Tiny Attacher. All of these pieces are in the Adventure Seeker Living Life and Adventure Seeker Embellishment Kit. Love how the twist ties are used to hang the Wild Adventure die cut......kind of looks like a hanging sign.

At some point, I made a huge error in printing some photos. They weren't printed in true 4"x6". They were something like 4"x5.3" which is the true digital size. Oops! So all of those prints needed to be matted. I debated matting them on ivory cardstock, but thought that was too blah. I'm a little crazy in my style. I love colors and patterns so I used scrapbook paper instead. Since there's about an inch of paper showing once the photos are cropped and matted, I needed to jazz them up. All I did was add some twine held in place with tiny attachers and a piece of flair. Done. Simple. Looks pretty snazzy!

Check back soon. I will be sharing more from this crop soon. There is plenty more to share!

Weekend Retreat

Ever attend a weekend retreat or a weekend crop? If not, you must! They are fabulous. I just got home from one hosted by an amazing scrapbook store in Butler, PA which is just outside of Pittsburgh.

The Scrapbook Super Station is really one of the largest scrapbook stores I've ever been to. She carries so much more than just paper and cardstock. She has lots of embellishments, inks, stamps, mixed media (squeal!), altered are item, lots of Tim Holtz, and so much more.

This week there will be tons of pics and info about what I completed. Inky Hot Mess is introducing something called Glam Veneers this week. They're pretty sweet. I'm sure you will love them as much as we do! There were tons of questions about them at the retreat.

I will show what to do with photos that aren't printed in true 4x6. Oops! Did you know digital pics are actually 4x5.33? Yeah, I printed these pics loooooong before I started pocket scrapbooking. Imagine my surprise and annoyance. But it all worked out and the layouts are pretty jazzy if I do say so myself.

You'll also see what the girl who dislikes journaling does with her journaling. Yeah, back in the olden days before electricity and running water when I did traditional scrapbooking, I never journaled. Absolutely hated it. I sucked at keeping track of date also.....hello they are on digital photos so how hard was it to write it or stamp it? Apparently, it was too challenging for me. :)

This girl previously hated alpha stickers. Save your tomatoes....you'll need them for the salad you'll be eating tonight while you check out my posts. I used bunches of them. You'll get to see what happens when they collide with ink and what I do what I can't get them to sit perfectly on a card. No point in having a nervous breakdown over a letter....especially since the trash was sitting just 8 inches away.

Come back soon for lots of info and goodies! You'll be happy you did! Come back even if you don't pocket scrapbook. You'll love all the info and pics. This stuff will work for anyone who has ever taken a photo!

Pocket Scrapbooking Handmade Cards

Crop on the Cape was fabulous as always. It's so great seeing friends and others I only get to see once a year since our store is gone. This year was sooooo darn cold that I didn't go to the ocean even though it's only a few blocks away. I had to leave a few days early to go and my travel was completely messed up because of a crazy March blizzard we got hit with in Western New York. Yup, an ACTUAL blizzard! Then I had to get out ahead of an ice storm. UGH! Then I woke up to an inch snow outside my hotel. At least I made it to Ikea! And to the Crop on the Cape.

I worked on my first nephew's first year of life. I now have three nephews! And the first one is going to be seven years old shortly. It would be nice to get all of his photos printed and into an album before he's 40. Pocket scrapbooking to the rescue!

I lived on the edge while at the Crop. I didn't bring many printed journaling or filler cards with me. I did bring mountains with me though. I spent a few weeks cutting up all of the baby boy paper I bought for him. Yes, I really cut up an entire Ikea Expedit cube full of paper into 4x6 cards. I didn't cut any into 3x4 because I figured I would cut them when I need them and I was really sick of cutting paper! I spent about three weeks doing it. And to think, there's only 27 cubes of paper and 10 cubes of cardstock left! I know you're totally jealous. :)

I brought several stamps, stickers, rub-ons, and embellishments with me. I knew I would make some of my own journaling cards. Some of the embellishments were washi tape (can't get enough of that stuff!!), buttons, brads, and twine (another fave). Instead of full size ink pads, I brought ink cubes. They take up far less space and weigh less. Two things to think about when going to a crop. It always feels like you're moving which is not fun.

I made several journaling cards over the four days and will be sharing them all with you in a series of posts. There's far too many to put them all in one post.

Think Tank Tuesday

Today's Think Tank Tuesday is all about journaling. I'm personally not a huge fan of journaling, but  I am finding that it is a necessity. I won't live forever and I won't remember every place I have visited in my lifetime. There are already many that I have forgotten and without my photos would have no idea I was ever there! It's a good thing I take photos of signs when traveling as well. I'd really be up a creek without many of them.

So why journal? You can jot down dates and places and faces. We have hundreds of photos in our mountain of genealogy and we have no idea who most of those people are. We're guessing their family, but we have no idea if they're Great Aunt Tildy or Great Great Great Uncle Fred. Why? Because no one took the two seconds to write down who they were! Everyone probably just assumed that everyone would remember. Heck, there are people in my wedding photos who I have no idea who they are and that was only 16 years ago. I will need name tags for everyone in another 20 years! Probably one for myself as well.

People come and go from our lives. With journaling, you can write down so much more than a time, place, and face. You can write the story. Isn't the story why we scrapbook? If we weren't interested in the story, we could simply have photo albums stuffed to the gills on our bookshelves. Scrapbooks don't just hold photos; they tell our story. How we lived our life. Whether we were world travelers, annual Disney vacationers, gardeners, military families who move every few months, come from large or small families, have a house full of pets, built our own house and our homes, made your own clothes or quilts, went to prom and attended graduation (yay for making it!), were born, and most importantly that we LIVED.

Here's my CHALLENGE to you: Journal. Yes, really it's that simple. But do NOT use your computer and a pretty font to type it all up. Write it out with a pen or marker in YOUR hand writing! Hand writing is going way of the typewriter.

So many kids today don't learn cursive and it's an art that has been dying since I was a child. My great-grandmother taught handwriting way, way back when. My grandfather had the most beautiful handwriting. When I was a little girl, I would sit on his lap and ask him to write for me. His name was Earl Ezra and his E's were simply gorgeous. They had about a hundred loops and looked like calligraphy. I always wanted to learn how to write like him. I loved sitting in his lap and watching him wind up to write those loops.

Sounds like a silly memory, but it still fascinates me 30-something years later and I remember it like it was yesterday. He's gone now, but I have that amazing memory and I think of him every time I see handwriting. Little did I know that as a little girl that would have such an impact on me.

This is why handwriting your journaling my CHALLENGE to you. I CHALLENGE you to create a memory for someone in your life. It could be with one of your children or a sibling. Talk about your writing. My mother has nice handwriting. It's not as fancy as my grandfather's, but her handwriting looks like a script font as well. Somewhere along the way our society lost that. That saddens me because it's another lost art form. People took great pride in their handwriting abilities and nowadays we just type everything on a computer and print it out in one the tens of thousands of fonts we have accessible to us at a moment's notice.

You and I won't be here forever. But our memory can live on in something as simple as our handwriting. While we may not particularly care for our handwriting, it is ours and ours alone. It's unique to each of us!

Until next time *

Write. With a pen. Not with mechanical means.

Handmade Ephemera

So I don't if it's proper to call these pieces ephemera since they're not old pieces. They are brand new. They are also handcrafted. This artist hand cuts her pieces. She says she does her work all by scissor. That's just crazy! They all look beautiful and I am extremely happy with my purchases from Pacokeco Scribbles. She is an Etsy artist. And I use the word artist because her scissor work is simply amazing!
